“Epistemology issues” (2)

1 Samuel 2:3 says that God is a God of knowledge. And from my previous post, I cited the image of God in man from Genesis and Job regarding God giving man understanding. Also, there are places in Romans chapter 1 & 2 and Romans 8:7 which teach that man has certain innate knowledge that is not derived from the senses (i.e., sensory experience). It is from these and other passages that we know that all knowledge comes from God. The knowledge falsely called is due to suppressing the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1).

So, the Scriptural evidence refutes the view that knowledge *only* comes through the senses. From some of the aforementioned passages, we see that *some* knowledge does not come through the senses, but is innate (some speak of ” a priori equipment”).

Jesus talked of the rich man and the sore-covered beggar at the gate. The rich man experience torment despite having no physical body. Other passages have clear implications that the temporarily disembodied saints will have sight even though their physical eyes, etc., are smoldering in the grave somewhere. Thus, there is some hard to explain combination between things like the physical eyes, brain, synaptic neurons, electrical impulses, etc., and the spirit of the man within him.

From Romans 1 and the Psalm that says the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament His handiwork, I think there is a connection between knowledge that is innate and knowledge that comes through the instrument of the senses. Romans 1:19 speaks of innate knowledge that God has placed in man to render him without excuse.

Romans 1:20 speaks of things clearly seen and understood by the things made. Even if one is blind, deaf, or both, there is still a sense that by which one “sees” (with the fingers for instance) the creative power of God in creation.

But of course, it is due to the unregenerate mens’ distortion and suppression of what God has revealed within them that they come up with things like the big bang theory or a finite god instead of the true and living God of Scripture. Romans 1:21 says that the unregenerate know God, but suppress that which they know; and exchange the glory of the incorruptible God into a likeness of an image of corruptible man.

In short, there appears that the innate knowledge and the knowledge mediated through the senses work in harmony with one other.
