Foolish Fire

I am NOT promoting or endorsing Jonathan Edwards as a true Christian when I quote from him, but he provides some phrases to borrow and build on (i.e., riff on).

“It is the glory of the sun that such a bright and glorious light, and such a powerful, refreshing, vivifying heat, are both together diffused from that luminary. When there is light in a minister, consisting in human learning, great speculative knowledge, and the wisdom of this world, without a spiritual warmth and ardour in his heart, and a holy zeal in his ministrations, his light is like the light of an ignis fatuus, [false or foolish fire?–CD] and some kinds of putrifying carcasses that shine in the dark, though they are of a stinking savour” (Jonathan Edwards, Works; underlining mine).

Ministers of Satan esteem the Word of the cross as folly.  The wisdom of this whorish world tells them it is a mark of balance and maturity to view the true efficacious cross as “an important doctrine” for consistency, enrichment, and increased honor to God — but nonetheless an optional and non-essential doctrine.  When compared with their ardent, zealous, and tenacious defense of a false cross of no effect, their professed concern about “soteriological consistency” seems a matter of cold and phlegmatic indifference to the honor of God’s redemptive glory revealed in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6).  These tolerant ministers of Satan PROFESS to believe in a powerful cross, but DEFEND a powerless cross; they PROFESS the true gospel of Romans 1:16-17 while offering an ardent DEFENSE of the false gospel of Galatians 1:8-9.

Jesus Christ said:

“The lamp of the body is the eye. Then if your eye is sound, all your body is light. But if your eye is evil, all your body is dark. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” (Matthew 6:22-23).

I have called some of these ministers of Satan, Calvinist Angels of Light.  These kinds of Calvinists are defenders of a black light.  They defend those whom Paul judged unsaved in Romans 10:1-4.  Clearly the light within these fashionable Calvinists is facinorous darkness.  Theirs is a rotten refulgence; a rancid resplendence.  They COMMEND the truth, but they DEFEND the lie.

God the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul writes:

“For the Word of the cross is foolishness to those being lost, but to us being saved, [it] is [the] power of God. For it has been written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the understanding of the understanding ones. Where [is the] wise? Where [the] scribe? Where [the] lawyer of this world? Did God not make the wisdom of this world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world [by] wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the foolishness of preaching to save the ones believing. And since Jews ask for a sign, and Greeks seek wisdom, we, on the other hand, preach Christ crucified (truly an offense to Jews, and foolishness to Greeks), but to the called out ones, both to Jews and to Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God; because the foolish thing of God is wiser [than] men, and the weak thing of God is stronger [than] men. For you see your calling, brothers, that [there are] not many wise according to flesh, nor many powerful, not many wellborn. But God chose the foolish things of the world that the wise might be put to shame, and God chose the weak things of the world so that He might put to shame the strong things. And God chose the low-born of the world, and the despised, and the things that are not, so that He might bring to nothing the things that are, so that no flesh might glory in His presence. But of Him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, both righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that even as it has been written, He that glories, let him glory in [the] Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:18-31).

“Therefore, having this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we do not faint. But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor corrupting the Word of God, but [by] the revelation of the truth commending ourselves to every conscience of men before God. But also if our gospel is being hidden, it has been hidden in those being lost, in whom the god of this age has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, [so that] the brightness of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God, [should] not dawn on them. For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves your slaves for the sake of Jesus. Because [it is] God who said, Out of darkness Light shall shine, who shone in our hearts to [give the] brightness of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:1-7).

“But what I do, I also will do, that I may cut off the occasion of those desiring an occasion, so that in that which they boast, they be found also as we. For such ones [are] false apostles, deceitful workers transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And did not Satan marvelously transform himself into an angel of light? [It is] not a great thing, then, if also his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works” (2 Corinthians 11:12-15).

Paul says that this deceitful morphing into ministers of righteousness is NOT a great thing.  One (of MANY) method of deceit is to call a purveyor of the Galatians 1:8-9 false gospel a “muddled brother” who confesses a “confusing gospel.”  Or something.
